Weka Wars

Please Subscribe to my New Website here birdsinthemountains.weebly.com/

Recently, we have had a intruder on our land, of the Rail family. No it was not that hopefull crake I heard, but a young, male weka.
Picture
Of course we already have a weka pair; a old male with a younger female. They had 3 chicks.
Two Bananas, the old male, disappeared for a few days while One Banana, the female, hung out with her shy new mate. I have only seen one of the chicks since.
Picture
Taking One Banana meant there must have been a fight, so now Two Bananas has returned there is plenty of signs of it. He now lives around the house, very scared of the other weka. (Though not so much of us). This new young male is very shy around people, even One Banana does not come close as much because of him.
So I think "No Bananas" killed the other two chicks (they were large), but at least Two Bananas has survived.
I'll kept you updated on No Bananas and his mate as I'm sure they will hang around, maybe with new chicks later on.
Two Bananas wounds. He is currently blind in his right eye, but that is because of a mushed up face, so he seems to be getting better

I love sewage ponds

On Monday we went to Nelson Sewage ponds and the local Birds New Zealand (OSNZ) meeting.
The sewage ponds is a great place for birds! It is filled wetland birds like waterfowl, gulls, waders and swallows.
White-faced Herons and both Gulls feed on the mud area in Nelson Haven. Welcome Swallows and the White-Winged Black Tern fly over the ponds drinking and feeding. New Zealand Scaup, Mallard, Australasian Shoveler, and Grey Teal are presant on the small ponds, where as mainly just NZS on the large treatment plant. There are also several pairs of Black Swan with cygnets.
No other great birds other than the WWBT. The Australasian Coot and New Zealand Dabchick were not spotted. Nor did I get any Cirl Buntings, but I had a great time!

Oh we went to a friend's house too. Sorry the pics are not great.

Preparing for Aussie birds

PictureLately I've been preparing well in advance for birding in Australia next year. As the trip to the sewage ponds was rained on (I did not see the cattle egrets either) I still thought I'd better write some thing!.......

Falling behind with Ebird :(

Please view my post on My Website

With doing all the Young Birders NZ stuff I've doing I have not done as many checklists, and when I do I forget to submit them.
So today I am catching up on the few I have. What I noticed was I have been forgetting to write the dates. AHHH! Oh well, hopefully I will remember next time. I can get dates off the photos though.

Recently, I have heard of some Cattle Egrets in Richmond. I'm going to the sewage ponds I hope next week, so I am going to have a look then ;) I hope they are still there!!!

A new Start!

Dear Blog Readers (weird start I know)

I've made a huge, new weebly website which looks fantastic, under a simpler name! Not a long drag-it-on one like this blog!

I will still post my posts on here but the won't be as good as the new ones posts though. I'm sorting out a way for people to subscribe to my new site so I will mail current subscribers when it is sorted!

Please check it out at birdsinthemountains.weebly.com !!!

Regards YoungBirder!

It needs a update.

I feel rather bad about not posting recently so here it goes. (P.S You may have noticed the layout of my blog has changed, it is the closest to one I like, I may put a poll up on my set to ask if it looks better, Please vote)

OK, well not really much to say at the moment so I think I will put up my recent photo highlights! You can click to get them bigger.

Today at Teetotal Flats

We decided to go to the flats today, but it was rather bird bare so not much to write.
When we came to the sewage pond there was a Welcome Swallow, Mallards and Grey duck hy-brids. The rest was Bellbirds, Chaffinches etc. but I did see a Redpoll which adds to my Half-A-Big-Year list.
The wetland was frozen so nothing there.
We meet a DoC worker looking for gorse and broom. He said that Fernbird had been sighted further along the road, so we had a look but didn't find any :(
So just boring birding...
